How Balawise compares insurance

Balawise is not an insurer or a broker, and it does not show premiums it has not received from an insurer. You bring the quotes; the tool lines them up fairly:

Annual premium = monthly × 12 Year with one claim = annual premium + excess Cost per R1 000 of cover = annual premium ÷ cover limit × 1 000 5-year cost = sum of annual premiums with the stated yearly increase

Quotes are always shown in the order you entered them. If Balawise adds insurer partnerships in future, any sponsored listing will be labelled and will never change your comparison or results.

Worked example

Two contents policies

The cheaper policy has a higher excess, a bigger annual increase and narrower theft cover. These are example figures — enter the details from your own quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What should I compare besides the premium?

The excess, cover limits, what is included and excluded, waiting periods, how much premiums increase each year, and the insurer’s claims record.

Why do annual increases matter?

A policy that is cheaper today but increases by more each year can cost more over five years. The comparison shows the total over five years using the increases you enter.

How do I complain about an insurer?

First use the insurer’s complaints process. If unresolved, go to the Ombudsman for Short-term Insurance or the Ombudsman for Long-term Insurance (now part of the National Financial Ombud Scheme).
