How the comparison works
For each quote you enter, the calculator shows:
Annual premium = monthly premium × 12 Difference = (monthly premium − cheapest monthly premium) × 12 Year with one claim = annual premium + basic excess
Quotes stay in the order you entered them. Balawise does not rank or re-order them, and no partner arrangement can change that.
Check before you buy
- Additional excesses for young or newly licensed drivers, undisclosed drivers, theft without a tracking device or claims in the first year.
- Whether the car is insured at retail, market or trade value.
- Windscreen, tyre and rim, car hire and roadside assistance benefits.
- That the insurer is licensed by the FSCA (look for the FSP number).
Worked example
Two comprehensive quotes with different excesses
Quote 2 is R960 a year cheaper, but in a year with one claim its higher excess makes it R3 040 more expensive. These are example figures — enter your own quotes.
Premiums against your car’s value
- Quote 1R11 400 a year on a R350 000 car
- 3.26%
- Quote 2R10 440 a year on a R350 000 car
- 2.98%
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare car insurance quotes properly?
Compare like with like — the same cover type, vehicle value basis (retail or market), extras and excess. Then look at the total cost in a year when you claim, not only the monthly premium.
What affects my car insurance premium?
Insurers consider the vehicle and its value, where it is kept overnight, the driver’s age, licence history and claims record, how the car is used and the excess you choose.
Comprehensive or third-party cover?
Comprehensive cover pays for damage to your own car as well as to other people’s property. Third party, fire and theft covers others’ property plus fire and theft of your car. Third-party-only covers damage you cause to others.
Does Balawise show insurers’ prices?
Not yet. Balawise never publishes premiums it has not received from an insurer. Any future partner listings will be clearly labelled and will never change your comparison.
